The road crossing the churchyard of Kretingalė church
17/09/2010
Local government of Klaipėda district is seeking ways to remove the road crossing the churchyard of Kretingalė church. The request of town's community cannot be easily complied with, as the land which is planned to be built with new road is already used by private owners under contract of resort.
Church of Kretingalė was built instead of the old wooden church in 1740. The church and its yard were zoned by stone fence which was removed during the Soviet period when the churchyard was also crossed with a road that is still being used nowadays. The precedence of the fence can be proved by archeological exploration.
The community of the town aims for the road to be removed since there is also another archeological exploration, made earlier, which made a discovery that the road was built above an old graveyard.
Heads of local government of Klaipėda district claim they understand the community's request to remove the present road and produce a new one. The best place for this would be close to the old one, but in that case a little wooden shop should be transferred (turbūt kad šitas žodis). Professedly it could move into a building owned by the community.
The government suggested signing a three-party contract and if arrangement is possible, it also suggested covering the loss of private owners.
